SO LONG

gone are the days
when i will fling myself in his arms
and bug him for sweets whenever he returned from his toils and trips
he would climb the very tall coconut tree which stood proudly at the end of the pavement

he said that one was sweeter than the short tree at the back
"anything for you little one"
i remember how he would pluck as many as he could
he would crack the juiciest ones and feed me the sweet creamy flesh
he always knew the ones i loved
i was his little one;
even as a teen
he would give me piggyback rides
he got married and moved away
but he still came back to us, to me
with more juicy coconuts and much love
till the big oak tree at the backyard was uprooted
then things changed
the truth reared its head
i didn't know he was that which they all knew him to be
things got awkward
he changed
i changed...now seasons have passed
the Oak must be really dry now
now when i see him,
my father's son
i know him not.
